The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: Toyota has unveiled the new 2024 Land Cruiser, which comes in three versions: the 1958, Land Cruiser, and First Edition. The base model, 1958, is expected to start in the mid-$50,000 range.
Performance and Powertrain
Each Land Cruiser model features a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, delivering 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Standard across all models is a full-time four-wheel drive system with locking center and rear differentials. Additionally, a disconnecting front anti-roll bar and 33-inch tires are available options.
Affordable Adventure
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser marks a significant price drop compared to its predecessor, the 2021 model, which started at $87,030. Toyota aims to boost sales significantly, planning to sell all 5,000 units of the First Edition within the first three months. Following this, production will shift to the more affordable 1958 and standard Land Cruiser models.
Platform and Design
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser rides on Toyota’s new global TNGA-F truck platform, shared with models like the Tundra, Sequoia, and Tacoma. This platform also supports the Lexus LX600 and upcoming GX550. The new Land Cruiser is strictly a five-passenger vehicle, which helps reduce costs by eliminating the need for third-row seating accommodations.
Size and Dimensions
Technically classified as a 250-series, the new Land Cruiser is smaller than the 300-series Lexus LX600 but more advanced than the 200-series it replaces. It shares a 112.2-inch wheelbase with the LX but is nearly seven inches shorter in length. Its narrower body, prominent fender flares, and rugged stance distinguish it from its predecessors.
Interior and Comfort
Despite its narrower body, the new Land Cruiser offers a spacious interior, feeling larger than the current Toyota 4Runner. While specific interior dimensions are not yet available, the vehicle is expected to be more comfortable and roomier.
Efficient Hybrid Powertrain
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid iForce Max powertrain with an eight-speed transmission. This powertrain produces 326 combined horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, significantly improving fuel efficiency over the previous V8 model. The new Land Cruiser has a lower towing capacity of 6,000 pounds compared to the previous model’s 8,100 pounds.
Fuel Economy
Toyota has yet to release official fuel economy figures, but the hybrid powertrain is expected to significantly improve upon the 2021 model’s 14 mpg combined rating. The new Land Cruiser should also outperform the larger LX600’s 19 mpg combined rating.
Practicality and Features
The hybrid system’s battery is located above the rear axle, where a third row would typically be. This positioning slightly raises the load floor but offers a spacious cargo area. The standard 2400-watt inverter and power delivery system add to the vehicle’s practicality.
2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Off-Road Capability
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser retains its full-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case and Torsen center differential. It also includes a push-button-lock rear differential, Crawl Control system, and Downhill Assist Control.
Trim Levels and Features
- 1958 Base Model: Designed for occasional off-road use, it features skinnier 245/70R-18 32-inch tires, fixed anti-roll bars, manually adjustable cloth heated seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen, and heritage-style round LED headlights. It lacks a power liftgate.
- Land Cruiser and First Edition: These trims offer additional features and off-road capabilities, appealing to enthusiasts looking for more rugged performance and luxury.
The 2024 Land Cruiser blends modern hybrid efficiency with classic off-road prowess, making it an attractive option for both loyal fans and new buyers.
