Vietnam’s Green SM Begins Operations in India
India’s ride-hailing market has a new competitor. Green SM, the all-electric taxi service backed by Vietnam’s Vingroup and EV manufacturer VinFast, has officially launched in India. The company started operations in the Delhi-NCR region on June 5, marking its entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing mobility markets.
Green SM is already a well-known electric mobility brand in Vietnam and several Southeast Asian countries. Unlike traditional ride-hailing platforms such as Ola and Uber, Green SM operates its own fleet of electric vehicles, offering a fully electric transportation experience.
What is Green SM?
Green SM, short for Green and Smart Mobility, was established in 2023 by Vietnamese billionaire and VinFast founder Pham Nhat Vuong. The company currently operates ride-hailing services in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines before expanding to India.
The service uses only VinFast electric vehicles, allowing the company to maintain uniform service quality, vehicle standards, and customer experience. This approach differs from most ride-hailing platforms that depend on independently owned vehicles from multiple manufacturers.
Delhi-NCR Chosen as the First Market
Green SM has launched its services initially in the Delhi-NCR region and plans to gradually expand to other major Indian cities. Reports indicate that the company aims to deploy thousands of electric vehicles as part of its long-term growth strategy in India.
The launch comes at a time when demand for electric mobility solutions is increasing across India. Government incentives, rising fuel prices, and growing environmental awareness are encouraging the adoption of EV-based transportation services.
VinFast Vehicles Will Power the Fleet
The first vehicle expected to join Green SM’s Indian fleet is the VinFast Limo Green, a fleet-focused version of the VF MPV 7 electric MPV. The vehicle uses a 60.13 kWh battery pack and offers an ARAI-certified range of up to 517 km on a single charge.
Apart from the Limo Green, the compact VinFast VF 5 electric SUV is also expected to become part of the fleet lineup in the future.
The company-owned fleet model gives Green SM greater control over maintenance, vehicle quality, and customer service standards.
A New Challenge for Ola and Uber
India’s ride-hailing market is currently dominated by companies such as Ola and Uber. Green SM enters the market with a different strategy by focusing exclusively on electric vehicles and a controlled fleet operation.
The company hopes that its combination of zero-emission transportation, premium service quality, and dedicated EV fleet will attract customers looking for a cleaner and more comfortable travel experience.
Why This Launch Matters
Green SM’s arrival is significant not only for the ride-hailing sector but also for India’s broader EV ecosystem. The service will increase public exposure to electric vehicles while supporting the country’s transition toward cleaner transportation.
For VinFast, the launch also serves as a way to introduce its electric vehicles to Indian consumers before the brand begins large-scale vehicle sales in the country.
As competition in the mobility sector intensifies, Green SM’s all-electric approach could reshape expectations around sustainable urban transportation and accelerate EV adoption across India.
